Using Java for Multimedia Communication

IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is standardized by telecommunication and IT industries to enable multimedia communication from mobile and fixed devices (including phones, PDAs, desktops and laptops). The signaling in IMS is largely based on SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). IMS offers many multimedia communication services, such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP), presence and buddy list management, Instant Messaging (IM), etc. There is an enormous potential for new innovative services that combine the capabilities of web 2.0 with multimedia communication. Project SailFin and project Egret offer the tools to meet this challenge. Project SailFin introduces robust and scalable SIP Servlets on top of Java EE, while project Egret provides an easy access to the IMS capabilities.
The presentation highlights the main features of SailFin and Egret.

Erik van der Velden
Ericsson
Erik van der Velden has been active for more then 15 years in telecom applications and platforms. His interest has been mainly in the grey area between IT and telecom. He is very pleased that the telecom has been moving from proprietary systems and APIs towards more open systems. His focus has been java in general and Java EE in particular. The last year he has been involved in project Sailfin, where he worked mainly on the high availability features.

Barbara Pareglio
Ericsson
Barbara Pareglio worked for 9 years as a Java developer for telecommunication applications and platforms within Ericsson. The last year she has been involved in Java standardization for Ericsson, mainly for exposing the IMS capabilities to java application developers.
