The Quest for Parallellism: How To 'upgrade' Your Application

Track: Core

Target audience: Intermediate/Advanced

Prerequisite: Basic Java Threading topics

Language: English or Dutch

Abstract:
In today’s world, multicore systems are no longer exclusively available to those with a big wallet. Designing and building applications that exploit parallelism has rapidly become a required skill for mainstream developers.

In this session, you will be given a brief look at the current state of parallelism in Java and how you can utilize this in your applications. However, the focus will not be on Java's threading constructs. Instead you will be presented with a practical approach for increasing your application's scalability.

If your current application is experiencing the limits of its throughput, then the notion of task modeling may be just what you need. Forget about threads, let others worry about them for you.

Basic layout of the presentation:
* Current trends in Java parallelism
   * Changes in Java 6, and Java 7
   * Cloudcomputing
 * Task modeling
   * What is it?
   * Going from threads to pools
   *
 * Upgrading your application - The easy picks
   * Logging
   * Document generation
