Concurrency & Performance

Is there anyone who hasn’t noticed the switch in hardware vendors focus from clock speeds to multi-core technologies? Those developing the JVM and core JDK libraries certainly have and the focus of this talk is; what have they put in the JVM to ensure that your application will run optimally in this new multi-core environment. With these features in hand, we will re-examine the age old question of; does Java perform better than C.

Level: Intermediate

Track: Core

Prerequisite knowledge: Java and some understanding of Concurrency.

Outline of the presentation:

  • Concurrency summary
  • How do we know when we have a bottleneck due to concurrency
  • Demonstration with a benchmark in Java and C
  • Concurrency in the earlier JDKs
  • Concurrency moving forward
  • Demonstration with the benchmark
