Tuning JSF Applications - Session size matters
More and more JavaServer Faces (JSF) is used as the standard framework for developing web-based Enterprise Java applications. But since JSF is still a relatively new technology, little is known about the performance impact. Where traditional web applications can serve hundreds of users, untuned JSF applications often already get stuck with only 50 users. The major bottlenecks include large session size, high CPU processing and high bandwidth usage. Although these bottlenecks are a direct result of the current JSF design model, they can be reduced with the proper application guidelines and configuration. This session tries to demystify these JSF performance pitfalls and discusses ways to measure and improve the scalability of JSF applications. After quickly explaining the related JSF essentials, the major performance bottlenecks are discussed. After that, it is explained how the performance of JSF applications can be measured to locate the bottlenecks. Then practical guidelines and best-practices will be presented revealing some tweak settings to optimize the performance of JSF applications. The impact of the proposed guidelines will be supported by measured performance figures. Finally a comparison of the different options will be discussed to get you and your application right up to speed. Download the slides for this presentation (around 8Mb)
