University Advanced Scala: 20 mei 2010

The Java platform is constantly on the move. JDKs are no longer stealing the show, the spotlight is now on the platform itself. The JVM has proven itself, but it seems like Java has not been reaping all the benefits. That is why there is a lot of enthusiasm for new languages that run on the JVM. Scala is one of those newer languages and a very promising one at that. Like Java, it is a statically typed language, but it has the same expressiveness and brevity as dynamic languages. Scala also offers a very powerful combination of object-oriented and functional programming. Not only that, also it integrates natively with your existing Java code, making it easy to call Scala functions from Java code. Scala could very well be considered the most advanced language on the JVM today!

After the Scala Labs sessions in the basement during the J-Fall conference, Xebia has decided to take Scala to the next level. We have a lot of new material and want to show you that even in your current POJP (Plain Old Java Project) you could put the power of Scala to use and achieve a higher productivity level!

In this University Session we will, amongst others, cover the following topics:

- A look at more advanced features of Scala
- New features of Scala 2.8

In the spirit of the Hands-on Labs you will be able to get your hands dirty and do some real Scala programming. We will have a lot of new exercises prepared, from "Hello World" to advanced. Also we will have some some new and fun coding katas, that can keep you up and coding for hours! Each will help you get a deeper understanding of the features covered in the presentation.

Programma globaal:
17.00 - Ontvangst
17.45 - Presentation advanced concepts Scala I
18.00 - Labs I
19.00 - Tapas Diner
19.30 - Presentation advanced concepts Scala II
